Agua Day camp

Get on the water this summer! Agua Day Camp offers a chance for middle school youth (ages 11-13) to experience Rhode Island’s waterways on the estuary system of the Narrow (Pettaquamscutt) River, where the freshwater of Carr Pond mixes with the tides from the Narragansett Bay.

  • At Agua Day Camp, youth learn to paddle! We offer professional instruction in water safety and kayaking techniques. We’ll move our bodies together and practice mindfulness on the water.

  • Together, we’ll learn the Black & Indigenous history of our local waterways. Youth will learn from Indigenous community members what the rivers, ocean, and the life they sustain mean to Native people. They’ll learn how the water has played a role in the history of Black communities in Rhode Island—including how Black people have found freedom through oysters.

  • Youth will get to know the ecology of the estuary through hands-on science. They’ll help monitor oyster populations in Upper Pond and practice measuring water quality. They’ll get to know the smell of seaweed and what it’s like to hold a crab or touch a barnacle.

  • On a field trip to Walrus and Carpenter oyster farm, youth will learn how sustainable aquaculture works. They can practice shucking an oyster—and get to taste one!
